Recently I had the opportunity to see an exhibit of photography by mid-century photographer Imogen Cunningham. I was inspired by Cunningham’s black and white magnolia images. I loved her use of contrast or light and shadow, which is what I have tried to recreate here but with a more modern look. I was thrilled to find this fresh blossom low enough on the tree to get close and shoot it with my macro lens. The stamens were pristine, and the green fruit at the center had not yet emerged. That beautiful center is delicate, while the tepals are tough and sturdy. This is another example of contrast in the image. By the way, magnolia flowers don’t have actual petals; they are called tepals. A dark sepia background provides the contrast you would find in a black and white image and complements the shadows created by the tepals
